Sensitive souls

Artists historically have been considered a little “different,” perhaps a little more “sensitive.” A recent study released by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) may lend credence to that notion.

The inaugural U.S. Music Creator Wellness Study surveyed both artists and the general population, according to a news release. ASCAP represents more than 715,000 artists, including Beyoncé, Jay Z, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Dr. Dre, Katy Perry, Coldplay, Trent Reznor and Demi Lovato.

Here are some of the survey’s insights into how artists view wellness and health needs compared to the general population:

Artists are:

  • 2-3 times more likely to feel alone, disappointed and ignored.
  • 83 percent more likely to say meditating or practicing mindfulness is very important to them.
  • 55 percent more likely to say therapy or coaching for self-improvement is very important to them.
  • 31 percent more likely to say that exercising is very important to them.
  • 42 percent more likely to say feeling connected to others is very important to them.

In response to these findings, ASCAP announced the launch of a wellness program for its members to meet the evolving needs for their physical and mental well-being.
