Learning what you need to know
You don’t always have to have a financial planner to get the financial advice you need. You may be unaware of the services offered by institutions you already use. Here are some places to ask for free financial advice:
- Your bank or credit union. Bankers know how to listen to you and analyze your financial goals. They can help when you’re planning to buy a home or if you just want a big picture of your current financial situation.
- There are pro bono financial advisors available. The Foundation for Financial Planning is a nonprofit organization that offers resources and counseling. GreenPath is another nonprofit that will give you credit counseling and other information free or at a low cost.
- Search online. There are countless articles from financial experts at your fingertips. MagnifyMoney has educational articles and interactive tools. You can find a vast amount of information from the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau Q&A about common topics. There are also many resources available on Facebook.
- Personal finance podcasts are useful and information is provided by experts. Try “Stacking Benjamins” or “BiggerPockets.”
