Big triggers

Significant sources of stress include mass shootings, health care and the 2020 presidential election, according to the 2019 Stress in America survey by the American Psychological Association.

Seventy-one percent of people surveyed say mass shootings are a significant source of stress. Nearly seven in 10 adults (69 percent) say health care is a stressor, with the cost of health care as the most commonly cited source of that stress (64 percent). More than half of U.S. adults (56 percent) identify the 2020 election as a stress point.

In addition, stress related to climate change/global warming increased significantly, 56 percent in 2019 versus 51 percent in 2018. And more adults also report that widespread sexual harassment causes them stress today: 45 percent in 2019 versus 39 percent in 2018.
