The risks of radiation
Medical imaging procedures such as X-rays, PET scans and CT or CAT scans, although noninvasive, can create health risks for patients, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of the concerns related to imaging procedures that use radiation include increases in the chance of a patient developing cancer later in life, skin issues, hair loss and possible allergic reactions to dye injected into the veins. The benefits of medical imaging, however, include determining whether surgery is the right treatment option, obtaining a better view of organs, bones and tissues, guiding joint replacement options and treatments of bone fractures, and guiding the placement of devices (catheters, stents, and so on) in the body, as well as the ability to locate tumors of other blockages. Medical imaging tests should be performed only when necessary, so discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
