Flipping the bird

Thanksgiving dinner can fill you up but won’t leave you thin in the wallet. Last year’s average cost for a Thanksgiving turkey came in at $21.71 for a 16-pound bird, the lowest retail price since 2014, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual survey.

The average cost of the 2018 feast for 10 people—with plenty for leftovers—was $48.90, or less than $5 per person. This includes all the traditional fixings: stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a veggie tray, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, coffee and milk.

This cost was a 22-cent decrease from the previous year’s average of $49.12. In fact, the average cost of Thanksgiving dinner has declined steadily since 2015 and last year reached its lowest level since 2010.
